Priests & Youth Ministers
Who runs theASCENT?
Each of our 3 locations is served by a core team of 3: community lead, culture lead, and operations lead. Our community lead is responsible for pastoral care. The culture lead ensures that our key value are upheld and promoted in all that we do. Finally, the operations lead takes care of logistics at and between weekends to makes sure the whole process runs smoothly. We then have cohort teams of 4-5 who journey through the three years with an individual cohort, including running PoDs, mentoring, and intentionally relational youth ministry.
Who is theASCENT for?
theASCENT is an opportunity for those individuals who have been Confirmed and feel ready to take a step further in their faith than perhaps others in their parish group may be ready for. We recommend considering it for young people who show a clear commitment to their faith and a desire to be supported in their personal relationship with Jesus.
Why is theASCENT not run in parishes?
Whilst we fully recognise the essential place of parishes in forming young people, theASCENT disciples the few for the sake of the many: investing in a small number of young people nationally who are then equipped to go back to their locality and impact the local Church. theASCENT is an opportunity for those individuals who have been Confirmed and feel ready to take a step further in their faith than perhaps others in their parish group may be ready for. In this way, having a young person on theASCENT will also benefit your parish by giving them the skills and confidence to serve in various ways at home, thus also being a witness and model of faith to other young people in the parish setting.
What content do you cover?
Over the 3 year process, theASCENT covers a vast exploration of the Catholic faith. Our curriculum draws on Scripture, the Catechism, and the teachings of the Magisterium. Topics include Baptism in the Spirit, Scripture and Salvation History, Theology of the Body, Catholic Social Teaching, Catholic Apologetics, Sacraments, Discernment, Vocation, and Ways of Praying - among others. Content is delivered through a combination of teaching sessions and interactive missional workshops designed to enable the young people to directly apply what they have learned, as well as in weekly online PoD sessions. An overview of our curriculum structure can be shared on request.
Will theASCENT open in our diocese?
Currently we operate in 3 locations: Brentwood (Essex) and Wigton (Cumbria) were our first two lcoations, and are both open to young people nationally. In 2018, we opened a 3rd base in Worth (Sussex), which is our first ever diocesan location in place to serve young people from the Arundel & Brighton Diocese. Our vision is that over the coming years we will continue to expand and plant new diocesan bases in other parts of the country. We are prayerfully discerning where the next location will be, but if you are interested in bring theASCENT to your diocese we recommend raising this with your Bishop before getting in touch at email@example.com.
